Biography

Susie Finkbeiner is the CBA bestselling author of All Manner of Things, as well as A Cup of Dust, A Trail of Crumbs, and A Song of Home. She serves on the Fiction Readers Summit planning committee, volunteers her time at Ada Bible Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and speaks at retreats and women's events across the country. Susie and her husband have three children and live in West Michigan.

Stories That Bind Us is a novel to be absorbed, not devoured or speed read. Upon completion you'll need some time to process the experience. This book is about the human condition, our hopes, our fears, our brokenness and the ultimate truth.

Events of the past affected me profoundly at the time, and once again in retrospect as events were depicted throughout this book. Finkbeiner brought the past to the present in such a clear-sighted manner, at times bringing me to tears as the story progressed. These stories that bind us are memories of a time that I know so personally, I couldn’t help but be emotionally overwrought at times.

I can relate intensely to the depth of this story, a biracial boy/child, mental illness, country life. The time is a reflection my own life and youth. I commend the author for her solid, earthy approach to a time in our nation's history that was beautiful, yet ugly in the same breath. I highly recommend this book, and it is my hope that the author will follow up with a sequel!

My Perspective ~

Veiled in Smoke is by far Green's best work yet! This novel depicting the Townsend family during Chicago's Great Fire and the early rebuilding of the city is impressive! If you enjoy the works of Lynn Austin and Kristin Hannah you'll love this novel! 

I found the characters to be true to life and personalities are detailed in depth. Their life challenges are believable and include circumstances that are well described and realistic. This is history related through fiction. The author researched her topics to the point of bringing the past to the present in a very impassioned manner. Details from the prison camps of the Civil War and the affect they left with survivors are disturbing. What was considered insanity at that time is now looked upon as a condition resulting from great trauma. PTSD is a more recent and appropriate description.

Relationships throughout this novel are poignant and natural. How family members relate to one another is a strong point in this heart wrenching and revealing story. Romance enters the picture as young people reach out to one another in a very difficult time. My heart ached as I read how this inferno destroyed everything in its path, and interesting information was shared regarding the rebuilding of the city. The compassion shared with neighbors affected by great tragedy is so encouraging. Our misfortunes many times bring out the best in people as described here.

For a more detailed description of Veiled in Smoke, please read the description above which I won't repeat in this review. I must repeat that this book is an impressive and detailed portrayal of a historic event through fictional characters. If you enjoy historical fiction, I highly recommend this book. I will be reading it again!

My Perspective ~

The third in the Roughwater Ranch Cowboys series, Cold Case Connection can easily be read as a stand alone. Connections from prequels are well defined and easily understood. This is another fast paced and unpredictable suspense story that kept me hooked throughout. A murderer has struck twice in the same circle of friends, and with no clues to his identity the author takes us back to the events surrounding the first murder committed several years ago. 

Characters in this series are likeable and realistic, and it's easy to feel swept away and a part of their lives. That is not to say that all characters are upstanding and honest.   Relationships are strained as events from the past have not been redeemed, but forgiveness becomes a strong point in this book. 

Dana Mentink has a talent for keeping her readers interested and involved in her suspense stories. There is no time for boredom as action and mystery lurk around every corner, and the plot moves along swiftly. I love these books for numerous reasons. They're easy to read, fast moving, and they take me away from the more pressing issues in my life. Highly recommend, and looking forward to the fourth in this series!

My Perspective ~

The Land Beneath Us is the third in this series, and I had not read the first or second books. There was only one reference to a person that I did not recognize, so in my opinion this book can easily stand on its own. The cast of characters is diverse and well described, and the settings throughout were very well documented. It is obvious that a lot of research went into this book, particularly of D-Day, and the preparation that went into it.

This book evoked a wealth of emotions that at times brought me to tears, and other times I rejoiced. Prejudice, empathy and forgiveness are highlights through this touching story. I have read several of this author's books, and find that she weaves deep human emotions into her characters that have a major impact on the reader. Family issues are at the core of both main characters, and overcoming those obstacles is an important part of healing and reconciliation. I enjoyed this book very much, and will more than likely pick up copies of the prequels to it. I highly recommend this book.
