My Perspective ~

Chapman originally began her writing career penning Amish fiction and Amish cozy mysteries. In recent years she has broadened her writing to include Christian dystopian and Christian mystery/suspense. Having read all of her books I must say that she keeps raising the bar with each new release! This most recent book reveals her talent for creating a fast paced, unpredictable mystery that made it very difficult to put the book down. 

Characters are diverse and very well developed. Her career as a high school teacher has given her a strong understanding of people, and their reactions to a given situation. The description of the plot is listed above, so I won't repeat that information. I must say that if you've enjoyed Chapman's past books, pick up a copy of Coyote's Revenge! You'll have a whole new appreciation for this author's multifarious talents. I highly recommend this book, and look forward to reading the next in the series.

My Perspective ~

Sisters, and the events and anguish that separate them are the essence of this heartrending story. A comment regarded as preference for one daughter over the other caused bitterness that persisted for a lifetime. Our perceptions of an imagined act of favoritism can eat away at the hearts of our very being. Lovey and Bitsy carried that misguided perception for years. The relationships that paralleled the lives of these sisters were troublesome and unpleasant. Their parents' 50th anniversary party brings the two together after a lengthy separation. Their family yearned that healing would begin if the sisters could see beyond the past and find forgiveness for one another.

This author has a gift of developing strong and believable characters that create a clear picture of how each character functions. Most characters throughout this book are charming and engaging. I had a difficult time liking Lovey and Bitsy, and that influenced my reactions to this book. Names and nicknames affected me as trite and somewhat irritating. This may be a geographical difference and doesn't affect my rating of this book.

The perennial gardens and literary connections add to the execution of this memorable story. That coupled with the relationship between the Sutherlands reveals that true love can survive the test of good and bad times. Adversity comes to all in different ways, and the reactions and actions that one takes has a profound effect on circumstances beyond our control. 

Detailed descriptions are breathtaking, and create an artistic portrait of the grandeur that defines Perennials! I highly recommend this very poignant work of art!

My Perspective ~

A familiar character to those of us who have been biting our nails throughout this series, Tess takes us on another bone chilling adventure to the mountains of West Virginia. Summoned by her ex-convict, former drug dealing mom, Tess hesitantly takes to the mountains to visit her. Her recent release from prison has Tess wary of spending time with her, and shortly after her arrival the body of a teen aged boy is discovered beside her mom's trailer. It appears the boy has died from a drug overdose. Trouble looms!

Multiple characters play key roles throughout this multi layered mystery, and drug abuse is big business in the small town of Boone. Tess can't resist a challenge when it comes to solving a crime, and makes herself "at home" in her mom's trailer, intent on discovering whatever information becomes available regarding the teen's death. Her mom disappears, raising concern that her mom may have been involved.

Written with depth and detail the author sets up multiple possibilities regarding who might be behind the drug deals occurring in and around Boone. Any one of a number of people could be responsible for mysterious deaths due to bad drugs or drug overdoses. Tess leaves no stone unturned.

I found myself holding my breath and reading as fast as I could to discover what was around the next corner! I had absolutely no clue who was wreaking all the havoc within the drug community. Everyone was a suspect, but the answer to my questions was not what I expected. Another page turner by Heather Gilbert! Pick up a copy to see what I'm saying! If you're like me you'll have goosebumps while reading this book!

Susie Finkbeiner is a story junkie. Always has been and always will be. It seems it's a congenital condition, one she's quite fond of.

After decades of reading everything she could get her hands on (except for See the Eel, a book assigned to her while in first grade, a book she declared was unfit for her book-snob eyes), Susie realized that she wanted to write stories of her own. She began with epics about horses and kittens (but never, ever eels). 

It takes years to grow a writer and after decades of work, Susie realized (with much gnashing of teeth and tears) that she was a novelist. In order to learn how to write novels, she read eclectically and adventurously (she may never swim with sharks, but the lady will jump into nearly any story). After reading the work of Lisa Samson, Patti Hill, and Bonnie Grove she realized that there was room for a writer like her in Christian fiction.

Her first novels Paint Chips (2013) and My Mother's Chamomile (2014) have contemporary settings. While she loved those stories and especially the characters, Susie felt the pull toward historical fiction.

When she read Into the Free by Julie Cantrell she knew she wanted to write historical stories with a side of spunk, grit, and vulnerability. Susie is also greatly inspired by the work of Jocelyn Green, Rachel McMillan, and Tracy Groot.

A Cup of Dust: A Novel of the Dust Bowl (2015), Finkbeiner's bestselling historical set in 1930s Oklahoma, has been compared to the work of John Steinbeck and Harper Lee (which flatters Susie's socks off). Pearl's story continues with A Trail of Crumbs: A Novel of the Great Depression (2017) and A Song of Home: A Novel of the Swing Era (2018). 

What does she have planned after that? More stories, of course. She's a junkie. She couldn't quit if she wanted to.

My Perspective ~

Still tormented by her mother's desertion and failure to return, Pearl clings to her father and Uncle Gus and Aunt Carrie. Her dearest friend, Ray, is both brother and soul mate, a youngster whose own pain is raw and disheartening. Opal Moon, hired helper and caregiver, is discovered to be a swing dancer! Pearl is enchanted and begs Opal to give her lessons, creating a reason to blossom, a diversion from her haunting reality.

Pearl has become a part of my life. Her grit, determination and gentle spirit are endearing, and my heart aches for this young girl whose childhood is filled with chaos, torment and disappointment. This author possesses a rare gift, creative insight into the souls of her characters. This gift, unwrapped, penetrates the hearts of those who read her compositions.  Steeped in rich detail, accurate historical facts, and tenderness for her characters creates a very real portrait of humanity. Leaving the reader enraptured, these stories are unforgettable.

Although this series has ended, Pearl's story continues in the hearts of those of us who know and love her. My life has been changed by Pearl and the many other characters I've grown to love in this series. I'm smitten with each of the Pearl Spence stories, and the transition from one installment to the next is seamless. This book could be a stand alone, but there is so much more to Pearl's young life that I would be remiss in not encouraging you to read all three books. I hope you love them as much as I do!

My Perspective ~

Gingerbread Wishes was created by Laura V. Hilton in the  enticing manner for which she is known. Her characters are endearing and delightful. The plot moves along swiftly keeping the reader's attention. Laura's story is descriptive, and intense in all the right places. I can always count on a great love relationship where this author is concerned! I'm a long-time fan of Laura's, and this sweet Thanksgiving novella is as enticing and filled with surprises as are her other Amish tales!

Thanksgiving Strangers by Rachel J. Good, is a creative adventure that brings into play some of the social issues that plague our times in both the Amish culture as well as the rest of the world. An Amish waitress is well portrayed as a sweet and friendly young woman whose faith is strong. A homeless man piques her curiosity, and her generous spirit reaches out to him. As the story develops various issues are revealed. Social issues include homelessness, stalking, embezzlement and drug trafficking. These issues are used very creatively as two young people search for answers in a cruel world. Strong points in this novella are creativity and the spirit of compassion and trust.

The Thanksgiving Frolic is told by Thomas Nye. Competition and pride are evident in this story of young people finding their way through their young adult lives. Giving with a generous spirit is a strong point, as well as the lessons of forgiveness, gratitude and humility. Descriptive and enjoyable, hope and faith are lessons through desperate times in this Amish community.

My Perspective ~

The Thorn family is admired and respected in their community. Unfortunately they share malevolence for Shelby's uncle and cousin. Barrett Thorn's wife was killed in a car accident caused by Shelby's cousin, causing heartbreak for the entire Thorn family. Forgiveness and acceptance is difficult, particularly for Barrett. His life was crushed, and the thought of a future relationship was out of the question, until Shelby walked into his life.

Dana Mentink has written some of my favorite mystery/thrillers. The author has an incredible insight into her characters, and presents them with authenticity and charm. The setting is creative and vivid. The pace of this book is fast and filled with mystery and intrigue. Danger lurks around every corner where Shelby is concerned, causing the Thorn family to offer protection for her. A love attraction develops as one of the Thorn men feels protective toward Shelby. I was captivated by this book, and look forward to additional books in this new series! Highly recommended!

My Perspective ~

Jessica was shunned after leaving her Amish roots for a new experience in the Englisch world. The death of her father brought her home where life with her family was difficult as a result of her shunning. Her family showed her no mercy, aside from her Amish aunt who shared the Revolutionary War history of her ancestors and the farmland left to successive family members. This compelling story of Ruby's life revealed a wealth of information helpful to Jessica. Jessica and Ruby's lives paralleled one another with their interwoven connections.

Current issues enter the picture, such as shunning, family dysfunction, personal loss and relationships, fracking on Amish land, and the future of Jessica's family property. Not your usual Amish story, the author adds so much depth to this compelling story with its rich historical detailing,  descriptive landscape and characterizations.

Written with strong insight into the Amish community and well researched information regarding the Revolutionary war, Leslie Gould has created one of her best achievements in her literary career. It was difficult to see this story come to its conclusion. I highly recommend "A Plain Leaving" for its wealth of family dynamics and personal developments!

My Perspective ~

Vannetta Chapman's newest release is based on an Amish community, but is so much more! The Amish featured in this book are warm and inviting, but not without troubles. The Bishop is wrongly accused of murder, and mystery becomes the focus of this book. 

Descriptive and deep, with a variety of characters, I was swept into this book without a clue as to who was behind the crimes that took over the story line. Exciting and detailed, I thoroughly enjoyed this story of close relationships and compassion for strangers as well as enemies. 

Well beyond the parameters of most Amish fiction, "When the Bishop Needs an Alibi" is very refreshing, and crime isn't buried beneath the surface. Anticipation grows as the plot thickens! I strongly recommend this book! Vannetta's writing only gets better!
