Biography

Dana Mentink lives in California where the weather is golden and the cheese is divine. Her family includes two little girls (affectionately nicknamed Yogi and Boo Boo.) Papa Bear works for the fire department and he met Dana doing a dinner theater production of The Velveteen Rabbit. Ironically, their parts were husband and wife.

Dana is an American Christian Fiction Writers Book of the Year finalist for romantic suspense and an award winner in the Pacific Northwest Writers Literary Contest.  Her suspense novel, Betrayal in the Badlands, earned a Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice Award. Besides writing, she busies herself teaching third and fourth grade. Mostly, she loves to be home with Papa Bear, Yogi, Boo Boo, a dog with social anxiety problems, a chubby box turtle and a feisty parakeet.

My Review ~

A small child was abducted while playing in The Hudson Raptor Sanctuary, pitting family against family, and the community against them. Twenty years later the family feud flares as Ruby Hudson reveals the discovery of her childhood friend's locket caught on a branch of an eagle's nest. The discovery dredges up old wounds and leads to one questionable event after another. Cooper Hudson has returned home to check on his brother, thought to be guilty of Alice Walker's disappearance. Will Cooper restore Ruby's faith in God after she has lost all hope in answer to her prayers? The suspense and mysteries continue as Cooper and Ruby attempt to discover answers to 20-year-old questions.

Dana Mentink has a gift for creating unpredictable suspense with an underlying thread of faith and hope. Hazardous Homecoming is an excellent example of that gift. The characters throughout this book are realistic and believable with shortcomings and failings, compassion and basic human needs. This was a fast-paced book with unexpected adventure and tragic events that kept me reading until the wee hours of the morning. I admire Dana's strong inspirational threads that run throughout this story of Ruby and Cooper and their families as they have ostracized one another. Cooper's faith is a balm through adversity. My Review ~

Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing is a beautifully written and illustrated devotional type book for youngsters. I thoroughly enjoyed it myself! The writing is creative, easy to understand, and saturated with lessons in understanding the Gospel and God's love for us. Everyday items found in nature are exquisitely utilized, the messages beautifully conveyed by the author, and illustrated by the artist. Illustrations are colorful and delightful! The CDs that accompany this deluxe edition are a bonus! The entire family can benefit from this beautifully packaged set. I was very impressed by this gift package of devotions and the CDs that accompany the book. I highly recommend Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing!

My Review ~

A snowy Christmas is quickly approaching in Webster County, Missouri. Abner and Mercy meet quite by accident and Abner sets the pace for romance by announcing that he intends to marry Mercy. Both have suffered grief and anguish in the recent past, and Abner finds Mercy to be his answer to prayer. A dizzying romance ensues. Characters from previous books in the Webster County series make an appearance. As is customary with Laura V. Hilton's novels, love is definitely in the air! 

This author has created another passionate romance that will quicken your heartbeat while employing discernment and Christian principles. I loved the determination that Abner's character personified! The characters in this book are very well developed, and there is no room for boredom. You'll be reading this one until the wee hours of the morning! Grab a copy and settle in for a memorable experience! I highly recommend this wonderful Amish Christmas novel.

My Review ~

"Grandma" Morgan's mission is to find a husband for her granddaughter, Sara Jane. Under the guise of readying her home to be sold she hires a hairy handyman to make home repairs and do yard work. Grandma's motives are out of love, but her approach to the situation is unpredictable at best. Sara Jane is clueless to her grandmother's motives, particularly in hiring a mountain man named Drew to make home improvements to her grandfather's house. Grandma's sudden interest in finishing a ballad quilt begun many years ago also has Sara Jane questioning her grandmother's bizarre activities. 

The three main characters in "Swept Away" are diverse. Tragic events from the past have created different responses in each of the main characters, from denying God's love to finding peace in God's very existence. The plot moves along with ups and downs and unpredictability. Relationships are strained and unconventional, with unexpected events occurring randomly. Sara Jane was a bit annoying and immature, but I thoroughly enjoyed Drew throughout this book. Drew's strong faith and sense of peace kept this story going. This is a tale of a developing relationship, and the hidden story that lay within the pieces of the quilt. A cozy read, one to enjoy with a cup of hot tea or cocoa. 

This is not a "Laura V. Hilton" novel, but a "Quilts of Love" story by Cindy Loven with the assistance of Laura V. Hilton. Both Drew Stevenson and X-Amish are the creations of Laura V. Hilton.

My Review ~

Dana Jacobs is supervisor in charge of the local Homeland Security office in Taos, New Mexico. Benjamin Marshall is the new guy in town, assigned to Dana's office after a 6-year military deployment. His charming personality rankles Dana to the core in spite of his brilliance as an explosives expert. His attraction to Dana sets her on edge, and is unwelcome. As dangerous events challenge Dana's best trained team she is forced to accept Ben's expertise and knowledge, along with a strong taste of romance she is unprepared to acquiesce. Dana struggles with bitterness from the past, difficulty with forgiveness, and loss of faith while Ben provides a calm strength and strong faith throughout their investigations into a threat to homeland security. Can she overcome her bitterness and accept the help of one who has the means and the devotion to assist her? Ben to Dana: "Trust me." His faith keeps him on an even keel throughout the most dangerous situations, and he knows that God has placed him where he is for a very definite purpose. He prays for Dana to discover that peace.

Some of you know me from my Amish stories. This book is very different, but the heart of it is the same. It’s a story full of suspense, romance, and a good dose of humor, not to mention a focus on God’s grace. Now for our interview with my main character, Dana Jacobs.

Who is your closest relative? 

I only have one relative, my sister Erin. I guess you could say we’re close, though she lives in Texas and I’m here in New Mexico. We talk on the phone at least once a week. She’s very important to me, and I know that I’m important to her. We’re there for each other. That’s what family is about. Right? 

What about your parents? 

I’d rather not talk about my dad—that’s a situation that is difficult to explain. My mom died when Erin and I were still young.

Tell us about your job. 

I’m the head of the Homeland Security office in Taos, New Mexico. I love what I do. I have a very good staff and together we’re a strong team. We’re prepared to handle any type of disaster—nuclear, chemical, biological, conventional . . . anything that threatens our citizens we are ready to step in and take care of.

Describe yourself for our readers. 

I suppose I’m pretty normal looking. I have brown hair, and I’m a normal size. Oh, and I’m in my 30’s, surely you don’t want my exact age.

Any romantic relationship? 

No, not at the moment. My life is my job, which sounds a little sad. It does take a lot of time though, and my hours aren’t really conducive to dating. 


It sounds like you have a good team to work with. 

Yes, I do. There’s one guy who is new—Ben Marshall. I worry about him. I know he can do the job—he’s an explosives expert. But he’s young and ex military. I’m not sure our little town can hold his interest. To be frank, he seems too eager to please. He reminds me of a pup that is overly exuberant. Always in a good mood, always volunteering, you know the type.

Anything that you’re afraid of? 

Heights—I have a somewhat illogical fear of heights. I know, we’re surrounded by mountains, but I’m more afraid of tall bridges, etc. Afraid is too strong a word. They make me uncomfortable.

You started to add something else. 

I suppose my real fear is losing those I love, or making a mistake that will hurt someone else.

What is the main thing in your life? 

My job. Doing it correctly and doing it well so that no one is hurt. I love what I do. Does it show? But some nights I realize that my life has become a little narrow. I should probably get out more, but who has time? 

Favorite hobby? 

I don’t really do hobbies. I know that makes me seem boring. I’m supposed to say para sailing or hang gliding or motorcycle riding. But none of those things interest me. Sorry—I really don’t have any hobbies. You know, I think if you can be satisfied in what you do, if you think it’s making a difference, then that’s okay. Maybe when I’m older I’ll have hobbies.

*As you can tell Dana Jacobs doesn’t exactly have a balanced life, and part of her past—well, it remains tucked away and hidden, which is why Ben Marshall is a confusing addition to her life. He looks at her as if she’s more than his boss, as if she’s important to him in some personal way. And when he brings up his faith? Well, she’d rather not talk about that either.  As long as things keep going smoothly, perhaps she can let the question of faith remain one of those things she’ll think about later.

Biography

Pam Rhodes was a familiar face on BBC Television's Songs of Praise for over twenty years, with high profile interviews and meetings including the Pope, Dr. Christiaan Barnard, Lord Lloyd Webber, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York and members of the Royal Family.

Pam cut her teeth in news journalism as the anchor for Anglia Television's evening news programme and was a patron of many local and national charities.

Well known as an after dinner speaker, Pam often compered large orchestral and musical events at symphony halls around the country.

Pam established herself as a prolific mainstream author in recent years, with five novels and eight factual books under her belt.

Sadly, Ms. Rhodes passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2014.

My Review ~

Neil Fisher is the new curate for St. Stephen's Church in Dunbridge, England. A 25-year-old bachelor, Neil is faced with all of the challenges and lessons of a new curate. Please see the book description for an in-depth synopsis of the book.

Fisher of Men is a charming story of coming of age for Neil as he transitions from student to curate, and proceeds in discovering life with its joys and disappointments. The characters throughout the book are delightful and varied, eccentric and annoying. Poignant and amusing, the story portrays humanness, wit, sensitivity and compassion. The cast of characters is eclectic. The setting is quite stunning, with descriptive elements that enhance the plot. Relationships play a very significant role in the lives of the parishioners of St. Stephen's Church. I enjoyed this easy read, but was disappointed at the abrupt ending to the book. This is not a stand alone novel, but the first in a series of books that need to be read as such. I enjoyed Neil's journey from curate to his threshold to the priesthood.
