My Review ~

Rhoda Byler has a heightened intuition causing her to have premonitions, visions and hearing the voice of her sister Emma, who was murdered a few years earlier. In a new chapter in her life helping restore an abandoned apple orchard and establish a new Amish community in Maine, Rhoda hopes to escape the ghosts of her past. Rhoda has had an ongoing relationship with Jacob King, who is drawn out of her life more often than into it due to serious troubles as a result of his past. His brother, Samuel, and Rhoda have trouble meeting eye to eye where business decisions regarding the orchard come into play, but Samuel's respect and admiration for Rhoda has turned his head, and as he succumbs to kissing Rhoda, Jacob appears once again. Jacob is infuriated with his brother for kissing Rhoda, and throughout the story the brothers are at odds with each other. When an Indiana Amish girl is hired to help with the paperwork at the farm Rhoda is forced to move in with an Englisch couple. Rhoda loves the peace and beauty of her surroundings in the orchard, and looks forward to canning the fruits of her labors, but her future there is threatened by Jacob's jealousy over the kiss that Samuel and Rhoda shared. His jealous accusations and insecurities cause continuing stress for Rhoda.

Numerous characters are involved in this book, the third in a series. I received the book without having the opportunity to read the two previous books in the series, and found it hard to sort out all of the characters at first. Cindy Woodsmall is an artist at depicting a beautiful portrait of the locale in this book, and I easily envisioned the beautiful countryside with the orchard developing throughout the spring and summer months as the story develops. The main characters are very well defined to the point that I was constantly frustrated with Jacob and his penchant for running off to "take care of his self-imposed issues" at Rhoda's expense. I became irritated with Rhoda for her indecisive and spineless nature in her relationship with Jacob, dropping everything at Jacob's insistence in order to please him. This book is well written, but I would not recommend it as a stand-alone novel. There is too much information based on the previous books in the series, and the story ends rather abruptly as a sequel is to follow. I would love to read the entire series of books in order to have the advantage of the long-range advancement of character development and evolving plot developments.

My Review ~

This fictitious memoir is written in the first person by a young North Korean woman named Chung-Cha (righteous daughter) to her daughter, Ae-Cha (beloved daughter). Each entry in this painful journal begins with related scripture, and follows with the details of Chung-Cha's life, arrest and imprisonment in one of the world's most notorious prison camps. Her journal begins in a village in North Korea in 1998 where Chung-Cha is the 12-year-old daughter of a Christian father whose faith endangered her entire family. Barely surviving in poverty is only the beginning of Chung-Cha's detailed description of her life after her arrest, imprisonment and persecution as the daughter of a Christian. The atrocities that were inflicted upon this young girl include lies, lack of food, abuse, torture, and being forced to live in her own filth amidst countless other prisoners. Life (if one can perceive it in that respect) under these conditions inflicted overwhelming physical, emotional and psychological effects. 

This is a very difficult book to read, and difficult to find appropriate words to review. The content in this book is overwhelming to one who has never lived outside of freedom. My lack of understanding regarding the strength and courage it took for Chung Cha to survive the atrocities she suffered throughout her years of imprisonment restricts me. I cannot imagine the torture and horrifying conditions. Alana Terry's insight into the life of her characters is outstanding and meritorious! She has written a novel of epic proportions with tremendous impact, and without the use of graphic violence, language or description. An in-depth amount of research regarding the subject matter had to take place in order to create this intense and unforgettable memoir. This is an exceptionally well written narrative, one that I highly recommend and would award 5-plus stars!

My Review ~

As a result of the accidental deaths of her husband and young son ten years earlier, Dr. Laura Branson devoted herself to paving the way for her daughter to attend medical school. Those plans may be about to change as Megan comes home from school for a weekend visit and announces that she is pregnant. With strong Christian convictions and dedicated to saving lives Laura and Megan share a strong stand against abortion; however, at Megan's announcement Laura questions her feelings regarding her unwed daughter's pregnancy. Laura had recently begun taking her lunch breaks with an older woman named Jenny, the owner of an antique shop. When Laura asked about a quilt in Jenny's back room Jenny explained that she makes a Christmas quilt every year that she gives to someone special. She prays for inspiration from God regarding who will become the recipient. Jenny explained that her current Christmas quilt is inspired by the story of the first woman doctor, Elizabeth Blackwell. Lunch dates become routine as Jenny shares the details of Dr. Blackwell's life represented in each of the blocks in the quilt, and how they relate to the obstacles she overcame in her life. Through Dr. Blackwell's life story both Laura and Megan are inspired by the history that parallels present issues they both face. This parallel reveals some thought-provoking questions regarding Megan's future as a doctor, and potentially as a single mother.

Author Kathi Macias is a favorite of mine. She has penned stories that have touched me in ways that have confirmed issues in my own life, and this book is no exception. In The Doctor's Christmas Quilt she reveals a rich history lesson that is interwoven with present day issues that make us question our deepest beliefs. The relationship between mother and daughter is done with compassion and realism. Issues of guilt, fear, uncertainty and spiritual concerns are broached with sensitivity and Christian perspectives, with resulting redemption through forgiveness and God's grace. The story of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell is very educational and blends seamlessly with the issues discussed in this book. As a quilter and mother of a daughter who became pregnant as an unmarried young woman, this story is very dear to my heart. God does bring beauty from ashes as Kathi Macias presents in examples throughout this beautiful and poignant story!

My Review ~

It's Christmas Eve, and Jacob and Marlee Ebenezer have an appointment with a divorce lawyer to dissolve their 20-year marriage. Years of detachment and indifference in their marriage have led to a tragic end. As heavy snow drifts down the car skids along the highway toward their afternoon appointment in the city. Heavy traffic and treacherous driving conditions prompt Jacob to take the shortcut on County Line Road. Marlee recalls that same drive in similar weather conditions after their Christmas Eve wedding so many years ago. She fears they won't make it over the mountain through the heavily swirling snow. Nearing a curve the last things Marlee remembers are two headlights and the sound of an air horn. When she awakens the car is embedded in a snowbank and Jacob nowhere to be found. With no chance to survive the storm sitting in the car alone, Marlee seeks help at a nearby home where she is welcomed by an older gentleman who claims to have restored numerous marriages. He seats her by the fire and goes in search of Jacob. As Marlee's concerns for her three children and her missing husband mount the older gentleman returns alone and takes Marlee on a journey through the past, bringing about haunting memories. The present fills with concerns, and fears of the future nearly break her. How will divorce affect their children? Are they making a mistake? Where is Jacob?

I awoke during the night to the sound of what I perceived to be a snow plow! Chris Fabry and Gary Chapman did a brilliant job of creating this realistic Christmas Eve!

My Review ~

Sixteen-year-old Rebecca Siersha had disappeared without a trace for eight long years. Her childhood sweetheart, Micah Stone, is a former marine and modern-day prophet whose visions of Rebecca in her current plight, surrounded by evil,compels Micah to drop everything and find her no matter what the cost. His visions of darkness and evil are confirmed by a young blind boy who has a prophetic sense of Rebecca's current peril, and the brief time line in which to rescue her. A victim of human sex trafficking, Rebecca has been drugged, abused, brainwashed and ravaged. She hasn't seen the outside world for eight long years, and has no idea where she has been imprisoned during that time. Micah's edict from God to "save her" gives him the momentum necessary to do all it takes to bring her to freedom and redemption. This battle between good and evil is powerful!

The innocence of youth combined with consummate evil are the essence of this unpredictable and compelling novel. The horrors of human sex trafficking are disturbing, but told in good taste, without depicting extreme violence, foul language or explicit sex. Shelley Ring's Christian values ring true throughout this novel of epic proportions, and the reality of this all too prevalent practice is well told. This story is not for the weak or faint of heart. The debauchery of human sex trafficking is a reality that needs to be openly exposed and communicated. It is our responsibility to educate, inform and fight this despicable crime with every tool we possess. Shelley Ring has done a magnificent job of revealing the facts and atrocities associated with this abhorrent crime. God's mercy, unfailing forgiveness and love are paramount in this powerful novel. I highly recommend Ransomed as an eye-opener to the realities of a practice that needs to be banished!

My Review ~

Kate Adams had become close friends with her mentor, Daisy Leacock, as they worked together in a research laboratory testing herbs as possible medicinal treatments. They were close to a breakthrough in a treatment for depression when Daisy was discovered dead. An investigation ensued, but with no evidence to indicate foul play aside from a cup of tea, the case was closed and Daisy's death was ruled a suicide. Kate knew her friend's strong spiritual beliefs and refused to believe that her mentor's death was self inflicted. Approaching Detective Tom Parker with her suspicions Kate insisted that she would find the truth surrounding Daisy's death. Several suspects had motives to want Daisy dead, and Kate insisted on investigating on her own to clear Daisy's name and prove she was murdered. Much to Detective Parker's dismay, Kate's insistence on following her instincts placed her in a number of dangerous situations. Parker's job was on the line because of the time he spent keeping Kate out of trouble. Kate's motives were also questioned as developments revealed themselves.

Sandra Orchard has written a compelling murder investigation that kept me on the edge of my seat and up into the wee hours of the morning! The suspense in this novel was ceaseless, and the questions regarding each of the suspects were endless! Characters in this fast-paced book are well defined and varied, some suspicious, others colorful, but all individuals of interest. The author creates settings that are detailed and descriptive, creating atmospheres of suspense in themselves. Underlying spiritual concerns were blended throughout this book, including faith and forgiveness. I thoroughly enjoyed this suspense-filled novel, and look forward to reading more books by this talented author.

Biography

For over twenty years, coast to coast, Pamela Christian, "the Faith Doctor," has been helping people in matters of faith. Pam compassionately wants people to confidently discover and live in, life-giving truth. Her ministry experience began serving as Teaching Director for Community Bible Study, (an independent, interdenominational, international organization). This led to her receiving invitations to speak nationally, followed by work as radio talk-show host in two major markets. She's been a contributing writer to various books and magazines and has published eBooks and workbooks of her own. With her experience and certificate in apologetics from Biola University, Pam's passion continues to be expressed as book author and media personality. She and her husband live in Orange County, CA, with their two grown children living nearby.

My Review ~

In this in-depth and academic study Pamela Christian shares her personal journey to truth-based faith. As churches have evolved over the years many Christians have sought to mainstream their beliefs into what is within their comfort zones. Belief is not necessarily faith. This building of what feels good and believing that there are numerous paths leading to an end goal are faulty at best. Pamela's quest for truth is an education toward believing what is grounded in biblical principals, examining personal faith and beliefs, and tossing out the lies that surround us. Faith should be based on solid foundations with truth at its core. 

The author takes us on a journey through her faith life, and coming to grips with what faith is and how it is defined. Many examples are listed to support the author's theories regarding faith and truth, and coming to grips with how to discover the one true path to Christianity and resultant eternity. Comparisons to world religions gives the reader examples of some of the misconceptions that exist regarding our faith walk, and how one can become ingratiated with untruths. My feelings regarding this book are that it should be digested in small doses in order to completely understand the premises that the author has defined. This is a study based on much research and education on the author's part.
