My Review ~

Unsettled and unable to follow through with anything, Annie was sent to Philadelphia to live with Englisch relatives during her rumschpringe. While in the city she finished her education and became a registered nurse. When a buggy accident left her dat with both legs broken she immediately left for her Amish home to aid in nursing her dat back to health, her family unaware that she had become a nurse. Samuel Yoder, her dat's best friend and the "doctor" to the Amish community was gruff and mistrustful of Annie's skills as a caregiver, but Annie's change in character was about to open everyone's eyes.

As in Vannetta Chapman's other Amish fictional stories the reader is immersed in the Amish culture and countryside. She paints a peaceful portrait of a hardworking farming community of close-knit godly people. The author has researched the Anabaptist culture closely and characterizes their lifestyle with integrity and intellect. Convincing characters are authentic and evolve naturally throughout the story, and the author has interwoven spiritual qualities throughout, enhancing a well-told story. 

Lessons in tolerance, consideration, forgiveness and grace flowed throughout this book and left me yearning for the simplicity the Amish personify. When family and friends asked why I was reading a Christmas book at this time of year I was a bit surprised because this story is so much more than just a Christmas story. It's a story of a people and the lifestyle they represent. I highly recommend this very touching story, at Christmastime or a 90-degree summer day!

My Review ~

Molly is a planner, an organizer down to the finest detail. Her family and friends have always relied on her to have events planned well in advance so that everything falls into place. Just 2 months prior her Dat died of a sudden heart attack, and life has become one big concern. Her mamm relies on her heavily since their loss, and her mamm's recent confusion has Molly worried. With their Amish flower farm in jeopardy Molly considers plans to keep them afloat, devastated that they could potentially lose their home and land. Molly's mamm has ideas for her to marry one of the neighbor twins in the hope that together the young couple could combine properties and keep their family farm, but Molly has eyes for another and a prospective plan of her own. 

A camping trip for the young Amish teens has been planned down to the last detail, with job charts and teams assigned for their respective duties, but Molly fears leaving her mamm when she has medical tests scheduled. With her mamm in the care of her older stepbrother and stepsister, Molly and her Amish friends set out for their camping trip. Shortly after leaving, Molly's detailed planning has her friends irritable and telling her she's too bossy. Can she give up some of her control when she's put so much time and energy into making this trip successful and enjoyable? Does no one appreciate how hard she's worked? Will she hear God's voice calling for her attention?

Leslie Gould has created some wonderful characters for the cast of Minding Molly. There's great diversity in the personalities throughout this book, and wonderful creativity that the author displays through the events in this strong story. Molly's character is tenacious and believable with her penchant for being dubbed a "control freak." The realities of Amish life are well documented and the family unit is strong, with the plain life described with accuracy and discretion. Unique and penned in a likeness to Wm. Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the author's Amish version of the story is filled with emotion that runs the gamut. 

I've read the author's other books in The Courtships of Lancaster County, and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. Take a copy of Minding Molly camping with you or just sit and relax for a while, and enjoy the charm and wit throughout this entertaining book! This book is a stand alone novel, although you'll be missing out on some great reading if you miss the others in this entertaining series!

My Review ~

Intent on following in the footsteps of her deceased father and his career as a movie director, Allie Kirkland eagerly accepts a summer position as a production assistant for the reenactment film of an 1861 ghost town known as Wildwood. The location and details pertaining to the reenactment are strictly confidential, and security is tight for the cast and crew. Bizarre events cause Allie concern, but she brushes them aside in order to fulfill the enormous demands of her job.

A historic parallel story characterizing Bonnie Rose, hired as teacher to the children in Wildwood is told concurrently. We are transported back in time to 1861, and the events that ensue. Shifting from the historic events that surround Bonnie Rose to the modern-day reenactment of the strange and haunting town give credence to questionable developments that occurred so many years ago.

As the cast and crew begin their training on site Allie is solicited to replace the original actress selected to play the part of Bonnie Rose. Far from her dreams of spending the summer in production, Allie complies and accepts her responsibilities in her new role as actor/teacher. Unexplained and mysterious circumstances occur as the reenactment proceeds. Are there ghosts from the past haunting the locale, or is Allie's imagination playing with her senses?

The coinciding stories of 1861 Wildwood and present day activities in the recreated town are composed with creativity and depth. Lisa Wingate has researched her subject matter to the point that the reader becomes engrossed in history and drama, injected with mystique, intrigue and suspense. The fourth in the Moses Lake series, this book stands on its own merits, and does not rely on past books in the series. The author has generated a highly imaginative and spellbinding legend interwoven with the elements of a modern-day thriller, blending the two into a very successful suspense-filled narrative. I found it difficult setting this book aside; however, reading into the wee hours of the morning created a few alerts to the creaking sounds in this old house. Pick up a copy of Wildwood Creek, make yourself comfortable and leave a few lights burning if you plan to read this book very far into the night!

My Review ~

A young Hispanic woman, Jolissa endured years of verbal and emotional abuse from her disabled uncle. Confined to a wheelchair her uncle was a bitter and cruel man who belittled Jolissa at every turn. A speech impediment made it difficult for her to communicate easily, but she felt a calling to help others, particularly disadvantaged children. She developed a friendship with an elderly woman who told her stories through the blocks in a very special quilt. Through this relationship and the stories she eagerly absorbed Jolissa began to feel God's presence in her life, a gentle moving that taught her to listen for direction for her future. 

A very poignant and emotional tale of a young woman who suffered much loss and heartache in her life is beautifully presented by the author. Descriptive and moving, this tale of a beaten down young girl offers hope through the influence of a "grandmother" character who plays a significant role in this story. Eloquently written, Kathi Macias has woven the lives of two women together in an inspirational account of the story behind a very special quilt. The layers of the quilt represent the life of a woman who overcame her own obstacles which have a profound affect on Jolissa's healing and search for direction. This author has never disappointed me. Her stories are created with depth and sensitivity, and inspiration that touches the heart. Another Kathy Macias masterpiece!

I am a wife, mother, and believer.

I am an eating disorder survivor, who makes art with words and paint.

I have two books coming out, this year and next, on the eating disorder journey. The first is 'Chasing Silhouettes: How to Help a Loved One Battling an Eating Disorder' (Ampelon, 2012), and the second, co-authored by Dr. Dena Cabrera, is 'Mom in the Mirror: Body Image, Beauty and Life After Pregnancy' (Rowman and Littlefield, 2013).

My first book, 'Save My Children: The Story of a Father's Love,' was published by Castle Quay Books in September of 2008.

I come from a home-schooling heritage; my mum has overcome brain cancer. She is my song. My dad is her hero. He cares for her daily and pastors a church. I am the eldest of four.

I love to travel. In June of 2009, an excerpt from one of my books secured a trip to a writing workshop in Lake Como, Italy; I've also been to the Dominican Republic, Australia, Korea-where Trent and i taught English for a year-Lebanon, Jordan, Japan, China, Mexico, Holland, England and Germany. When I was young, I lived in Africa along with my parents who were missionaries.

My Review ~

My skills as a reviewer cannot begin to summarize this book and do it justice. This book needs to be absorbed piece by piece like the blocks and stitches in the quilt that holds this story together. The fact that this is Emily T. Wierenga's debut novel is astonishing! It is impressive that a young woman created the life story of an elderly woman with such incredible depth of feeling and insight. The author displays wisdom beyond her years in portraying the yearnings, passion, emotions and realities in the life of the main character in "A Promise in Pieces."

The layers in this story are like the layers of a quilt, bits and pieces of cloth that comprise the top, batting which adds thickness and warmth, a backing to encase the batting, and the stitches which strengthen and bind the quilt together. As Clara's life unfolds and her faith is many times questioned assurance is realized through the light of something tangible in her life, and the scheme of God's plans are revealed, strengthening her resolve. 

This is one woman's story, her journey of faith, her fears and dreams, the journey she travels throughout her life, and the people who become the focus in her life. This is an amazing piece of art that may be lost on young readers who lack the experiences of older readers, but I believe that the lessons learned throughout this beautiful story can be applied to anyone's life. I highly recommend "A Promise in Pieces" as a remarkable and brilliant narrative! I look forward to future books by this author!

My Review ~

The death of her boyfriend as the result of a gunshot wound when she was a first year medical student deeply affected Dr. Shannon Frasier. A well respected and prestigious surgeon and professor, Shannon's competency as a physician is indisputable. Her fear of commitment, however, is obvious by her perpetual status as "almost-fiance" to Dr. Mark Gilbert. Mark's patience and strong faith are the strongholds that he clings to regarding his stationary relationship with Shannon. 

While enjoying a celebratory dinner with Mark and two additional physician friends Shannon's deepest fears are revisited through a similar incident on her front lawn. This second gunshot death shattered her world once again, deepening the intensity of her defenses. Shannon's loss of faith and her frustration at not having the capacity to save either victim haunts her. Her younger sister then enters the story, complicating Shannon's life further. Police involvement has become an integral aspect in this suspense-filled novel as well. As the saying goes, "the plot thickens."  

This is my first experience reading one of Richard Mabry's medical mysteries, and I found it very difficult to put this book down. As a former member of the medical community I thoroughly enjoy a well-written medical mystery, and Critical Condition was no disappointment. The author's medical knowledge is a definite bonus in this fast-paced novel filled with suspense and unforeseen developments. Considerable research is reflected through the detailed legalistic aspects that dominated much of this novel. The cast of characters revealed throughout this book represent believable and well defined individuals. Issues, such as addiction, fear of commitment and family dynamics are broached with candor and integrity. I recommend Dr. Mabry's book, "Critical Condition," and look forward to reading more books written by this talented author.

My Review ~

Archibald was the smallest kitten of the litter. God spoke to him and explained His presence and protection in fine detail. Adopted by Abednego, Archibald was a witness to the events that took place in this particular Bible story of King Nebuchadnezzar, and his eventual ordering of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego into the fiery furnace. God joined them so they did not perish, proof that God is the only God to be praised and worshiped. The use of a small and seemingly insignificant kitten is a wonderful and creative approach that appeals to youngsters, modifying what may have been a very frightening story into one that children can understand without fear. This is an excellent example of how faith covers us in frightening situations.

Told in simple terms, using colorful illustrations I found this to be a very positive and enjoyable representation of a well-known Bible passage. Teaching faith to children by the use of a kitten and his perception of the events in this passage, Laura J. Marshall has created an easily understood and effective method for teaching Bible passages to young children with a delightful and unique approach. Gently and cleverly told, and in easy to understand terms this is a great tool for parents who are teaching young children about faith and God's protection. In addition, lessons and prayers are included at the end of this story, enhancing the lessons learned throughout the book.
