My thoughts ~

Change is not an easy thing to attain. We tend to dig in our heels and refuse to budge, unless that change produces satisfaction that is easily obtained. Bishop Bronner has laid out some tools for readers to use in making positive changes in our lives that will benefit us through our Christian walk.

First we need to determine what changes we "need" to make, and face our fears. Change is difficult due to the uncertainty of what lies ahead. The suggestions given throughout this book create comfort measures to enable us to embrace those changes. Change Your Trajectory is a step by step way to reprogram the way we think and approach the future with confidence. We need to be sensitized to listen and hear what God wants us to do to in order to flourish in our relationship with him. Ultimately we need to learn how to praise and glorify him.

Change Your Trajectory is a valuable tool for new Christians as well as those who are seasoned Christians. Everyone has room for change, particularly in our faith walk. I learned many sensible suggestions, and encourage others to read and practice the lessons provided in this book.

This thought provoking book of discovering who and whose we are begins with a beautiful introduction using the song written by Tia Sillers and Mark Sanders, sung by Lee Ann Womack, "I Hope You Dance." An invitation to the discovery of who I am not, but whose I am sets the pace for a conscious choice. God's gift to us is love and eternal joy. Indecision is a choice. It is within our hearts that we decide whose we are.

The foundation of earth was founded on love with absolute freedom. Since the universe was built upon love, it cannot be purchased. Love can only be given freely. As we journey through darkness into light God promises his gifts and guidance to bring us to the greatest awareness in our worldly lives. The gift of free will belongs to us. Our choice is the ultimate reward.

Whose Are You is a gift in and of itself. The lessons of who we aren't and whose we are lead to a greater understanding of what is most important in life. Our choices make us worthy of who we belong to, and the author has posed an in depth view of which direction we need to take to reach that goal. This is an excellent book for new believers and seasoned Christians. I highly recommend it!

My thoughts ~

Once again, Jody Hedlund has composed a beautifully descriptive novel, the third in her Beacons of Light series. Strong characters prevail throughout this impressive adventure in Michigan's northern-most location. A villainous brute of a man controls this mining town of Eagle Harbor and everyone in it. Upon discovering that T. Taylor is a woman, he vows to make her life miserable.

The character Tessa portrays is strong willed, resolute and determined to demonstrate her capable teaching skills in spite of being a woman. Her acquaintance with the lighthouse keeper and his assistant bring back painful memories of her past, as the child of a light keeper. Ms. Hedlund brings the three adults together through two small motherless students, children of the head light keeper. 

The descriptive elements of Eagle Harbor and the lighthouse that safely points the way for ships into the harbor are impeccable, and easily envisioned by the reader. Historic information is accurate and well told. The lives of the area residents, mostly copper miners are poignant and authentic. Danger is a constant in the mining industry, and the magnificent power of Lake Superior is a deadly threat through storms and the winter elements. 

I was swept into this story of intensity and incipient romance and the constant threats from the town's villain, as well as the unpredictability of the Great Lake. As with the previous books in this series I found myself enraptured and unable to put the book down. The men in Tessa's life are strong and assertive, and the young children are charming and delightful. This is a book that will remain on my bookshelf and undoubtedly be read again. It goes without saying, I loved it!

A British writer, Katherine Blessan was delighted when she managed to get her first novel Lydia’s Song, which is about child-sex trafficking in Cambodia, published by a small independent. She had spent eight years working on it so had had to remain committed to it in the midst of other pressing life events and work!      
She is writing her second novel as well as a few short stories and would describe her fiction as having a gritty edge and a compassionate core, as she likes to tackle issues that might make people uncomfortable such as trafficking and FGM.

My thoughts ~ 

This British author has chosen a very difficult topic, human trafficking, but has done a wonderful job of presenting her topic with compassion and discretion. A Christian novel, Lydia's Song is carefully written without detailing the graphics of rape and prostitution.

The characters throughout this book are well presented, particularly Song as she relates her life throughout the years spent in captivity. Lydia is a bit difficult to like at times. I felt that she made hasty decisions without thinking them through, but that is a part of her character. I liked the changes that I perceived in her as she grew older and wiser.

Set in Cambodia, there were times that I was a bit confused due to my lack of knowledge of the country and its customs, and having been written by a British author some of the details and language are a bit different for American readers. Those are minor details, and don't really affect the story, however. 

I felt that this was a very well written story of an epidemic problem that exists around the world, not only in Cambodia. The trafficking of children and young adults is an extremely difficult topic, but this author told her story well.

Each of your lighthouse books is set at a real lighthouse that once existed in Michigan or still does exist. Tell us a little about the lighthouse in this third book.

 
Yes, my first lighthouse book (Love Unexpected) is set at Presque Isle which is on Lake Huron on the north eastern side of the state. The second book (Hearts Made Whole) is set at Windmill Point Lighthouse that once existed on Lake St. Clair near Detroit.

Undaunted Hope is set at Eagle Harbor Lighthouse which is in the far north of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In fact, it's about as far north as you can go in Michigan. During the mining boom in the Upper Peninsula, Eagle Harbor saw a rapid increase in the commerce in the area with ships arriving to supply miners as well as load up the valuable copper that was being mined. Due to the dangers of a rocky ledge in the harbor, the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse was established in 1851 to guide ships safely to and from the docks in the harbor.

What special research did you do in writing Undaunted Hope?

As I wrote this third book in the Beacon's of Hope Lighthouse Series, I had the wonderful privilege of visiting Eagle Harbor and the lighthouse that serves as the setting for this book. In fact, I was able to stay for a whole week in the assistant keeper's cottage that now sits next to the lighthouse.

The large covered front porch of the assistant keeper's house overlooked Eagle Harbor and Lake Superior, so it was a gorgeous view! Every morning I woke up to the sound of the crashing waves and every evening I watched the sunset. It was one of the most beautiful, peaceful places I've ever stayed.

Not only did I get to do in-depth research on the lighthouse (and walk around inside it as many times as I wanted!), but I also was able to research the entire area taking lots of pictures of the lake, flowers, wildlife, and the numerous waterfalls throughout the peninsula. It's a remote wilderness area of Michigan, sparsely populated, and cold! I visited at the end of June and brought short sleeve shirts. I had to wear sweatshirts almost every day instead. 

The location of Undaunted Hope is in the Keweenaw Peninsula of upper Michigan. Tell us a little bit about what makes this setting unique.

The Keweenaw Peninsula is known as "Copper County" because it has a rich vein of copper running down the center of the peninsula. In the 1800's early explorers to the region discovered the copper. And by the mid 1800's miners and their families were flocking to the numerous towns that formed around the mines.

Due to the decline of the copper mining industry in England at approximately the same time as the mining boom in Michigan's UP, many Cornish immigrants came to the Keweenau Peninsula to continue mining. To this day, the Cornish have left a heritage in the area including homemade famous "Pasties" that can be found at most local restaurants. These were the hot meat pies that miners would carry in their pockets down into the mines to eat for their midday meals.

The bustling copper mining community was a rough and wild area that resembled the Old West. If the danger from the mines wasn't enough, the residents also faced incredibly harsh winters where they were cut off from supplies from the lower part of Michigan.

Nowadays, except for a few tourist towns, the area is a graveyard of ghost towns and abandoned mines. During my research trip, I was able to walk deep underground in one of those old mines and get a firsthand look at just how dark, damp, and dangerous the mining life was.

This is now the sixth book that you've written with a Michigan setting. What draws you to write stories set in Michigan?

I've lived in central Michigan for the past sixteen years. All but one of my five children have been born in Michigan, and this is where I've raised my family. So Michigan definitely has a special place in my heart.

Not only has it been a wonderful place to raise a family, but it's also a beautiful state. Michigan is composed of two separate peninsulas connected by the Mackinac Bridge which is the one of the world's most beautiful bridges and the longest suspension bridge in the Americas. It is currently the third longest suspension bridge in the world. Much of the beauty comes from the setting at the Straits of Mackinac which link Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. The 5 mile long Mackinac Bridge (Big Mac) links Michigan's Lower and Upper peninsulas. 

The state is bordered by 4 of the 5 Great Lakes, giving it approximately 3,200 miles of shoreline which is the most of any state except Alaska. Michigan not only has lots of beaches and sand dunes and hiking trails and state parks, but it also is home to the most lighthouses.

Aside from the beauty of the state (which makes for very picturesque book settings!), Michigan has a rich history due to the lumber and mining era that attracted many settlers to the state, but also attracted plenty of colorful and dangerous characters as well.

All that to say, Michigan is full of wonderful, interesting, and fascinating stories of real life people. I've only begun to touch on some of those people, and I hope that I'll be able to bring more of them to life in the future. 

What have you enjoyed most in writing this lighthouse series?

Over the past couple of years of writing this series, I've thoroughly enjoyed getting to visit numerous lighthouses throughout the state. Not only have I attempted to visit the lighthouses that are used as settings for the books, but I've also been inspired to visit many others. Every time I do, I learn a little bit more about how lighthouses were operated and have come to realize that they're all so unique.

During the past summer of 2015 I toured several lighthouses including: Tawas Point Lighthouse, St. Joseph Lighthouses, and Mackinac City Lighthouse.

Each time I climb a tower, reach the top, and gaze out at the spectacular view, I'm always amazed by the beauty. I never tire of the experience and can completely understand the fascination so many people have with lighthouses. I think I caught the "lighthouse bug" and will forever be visiting them! 

You have a fourth lighthouse book releasing in June of 2016. Can you tell us a little bit more about this story? Is it connected to your first three lighthouse books?

The fourth book is titled Forever Safe. Like the others, it can completely stand alone. There's no need to read the others first to enjoy the story.

However, the main character in Forever Safe does make an appearance at the end of the third lighthouse book, Undaunted Hope. I won't say who it is, so that I don't spoil the surprise for those who haven't read Undaunted Hope. But I hope that readers will be excited about this particular character getting a story in Forever Safe.

My thoughts ~

The first book in the Eagle Harbor series introduces us to Tressa Danell and Mac Oakton, main characters in an unpredictable tale set in 1880 in upper peninsula Michigan. A small copper mining town, Eagle Harbor is located on the shore of Lake Superior, a major shipping port.

The characters depicted in this capricious and intriguing tale are varied, and the suspense is dramatic. I enjoyed the vast array of personalities presented and the resiliency that is characterized by the main characters. Life is precarious as both main characters suffer the consequences of past family members' actions. Survival and overcoming life obstacles are strong themes throughout this story. 

I highly enjoyed the action and personal relationships throughout this book. I also enjoyed a vivid portrayal of a beautiful area of the country, and the information regarding an actual lighthouse that still stands today. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

My thoughts ~

The Sandpiper is for mature readers. Some profanity is involved, and a few incidents of violence occur, although not described in depth. This did not change my high opinion of this book. I would classify this novel as Edgy Christian fiction as there are Christian components throughout.

Susan Lovell is a "new-to-me" author. What originally compelled me to purchase The Sandpiper is the fact that the story is based in West Michigan, my home. I will not miss any of Susan Lovell's future books! Her writing style is deeply authentic and steeped in reality. I related to the characters as if I had known them personally, and could easily perceive their experiences. The locale is described as only a resident or frequent visitor to the area would know it, and is an important force throughout the tapestry of these deeply interwoven lives.

The women portrayed in The Sandpiper are complex and credible. Personal experiences tear them apart, but the strength of their bonds empowers them to overcome even significant obstacles, reuniting them through love and acceptance. The relationships between women represented are powerful and heartwarming. Harsh realities are described with dignity and compassion. I highly recommend this book for its honesty, difficult topics broached and the strength of this author's creativity! This book will remain in my library, and will undoubtedly be read again.

My thoughts ~

This short story is a great background to the Eagle Harbor series. The stories of the children who are featured as some of the adults in the remainder of the series are charming and somewhat gritty. I loved the honest and authentic representation of the children in this brief story as they discover the value of friendship and the torment of a bully.

My thoughts ~

Dan Walsh has a gift for producing memorable stories replete with tenderness, compassion, and authenticity. Dan has detailed the love, trust and loyal characteristics of man's best friend, the dog. The detailing involved regarding prison inmates training dogs for veterans with PTSD is admirable and educational.

Finley touched my heart as I experienced the beauty of a well-trained dog loyal to his human. Paired with a trainer in a prison training program reveals Finley's capacity to follow commands and perform with precision. 

I'm very impressed with the components blended into this story of overcoming painful obstacles through faith, hope, and willingness to make positive changes. Character development was remarkable and credible. I highly recommend Rescuing Finley, and look forward to the sequels in this series. It's a story of hope!
