My Review ~

"Castles of the Heart" is the life story of Starlight O'Bannion, the details of her early years and the accomplishments she attained throughout her life. Born to an Irish immigrant and former Boston debutante, Starlight spent her childhood years living in a log cabin in the backwoods of North Carolina. Her best friends were the Hopkins family, a Negro family who remained sequestered in the woods due to active Ku Klux Klan activity. A brilliant child, Star excelled at a very rapid pace, graduating from college at the age of 18, and entering law school during the time prior to World War II. 

Star attained prominence as a New York City attorney and married the love of her life. Although exciting, fulfilling and rewarding, her life was not without adversity. Called home to North Carolina to legally represent her neighbor's grandson in aracist, false accusation and arrest for murder, Star's whole existence was challenged. A specialist in corporate law she had no experience representing someone in a courtroom murder trial. This life-changing event began the journey toward her destiny.

Hale Meserow is a new author to me, and I must say I was very impressed with the intensity of "Castles of the Heart." There is richness in detail and a depth of character that transcended my expectations. The story of Star's life began in an unhurried manner, but the pace quickened to include chapters of unexpected developments that left me captivated, not wanting to put the book down! Descriptive, compelling, and driven, this story of the influence of one woman in the early 1940s is masterfully told! Mr. Meserow has obviously done an outstanding amount of research into the subject matter to have produced this immensely successful novel. I highly recommend "Castles of the Heart!"
