Description
“Adventures with Vinnie” by Donna Winters recounts how Vinnie, found at the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter (U.P.A.W.S.), filled a hole in Donna and Fred’s life. Vinnie immediately won their hearts, but he had quirks. His personality traits were the fodder that fueled the writing of this book. “Adventures with Vinnie” by Donna Winters is about a dog and his sometimes frustrating antics, but it is also about dog ownership and the decisions these pets present to their owners.
Handsome. Affectionate. In need of a forever home. And we were in need of another rescue dog. Thus began our Adventures with Vinnie.
From his first day to his last, the only predictable thing about Vinnie was his unpredictability. Loving and loyal, an escape artist to rival Houdini, and a genuinely comical fellow, his antics will make you laugh, give you a fright (but only for a moment), and melt your heart. So join us, won’t you? With Vinnie, there’s never a dull moment!

Having retired to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, we decided to choose older shelter dogs for our family pets, dogs not easily placed because of their age. When an opportunity arose in March of 2012 to add a Lab/Dobie mix to our family, we didn’t hesitate. Nearly forty years of dog parenting had given us confidence that we could provide a safe, loving home for this senior pet fallen on hard times.
We hadn’t anticipated the likes of Vinnie.
Learn how that loving shelter dog with bright, longing eyes, led to adventures never expected the day we welcomed him into our lives!
This true story includes 12 full color photographs of Vinnie and his family members.

My Review ~
When Fred & Donna Winters felt the desire to adopt another dog they did their homework and connected with Michigan's Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter (U.P.A.W.S). Their mission as dog owners is to provide a loving and protected environment to older dogs from animal shelters. Vinnie, a Lab/Doberman mix, won their hearts, and their adventures commenced. Vinnie's antics mimicked the words sung by Frank Sinatra, "I ate it up and spit it out. I faced it all and I stood tall, and did it my way!"
Adventures With Vinnie is a 60-page book of episodes filled with laughter and humiliation, pain and suffering, and the love and companionship that a unique pet offered his humans, even in the most difficult situations. I first went through this book sharing the pictures of Vinnie and his companions with my little granddaughter who fell in love at first sight. When she napped I went back and read the story of Vinnie and his new family. Donna and Fred Winters have loving hearts and patience that lasts quite a lot longer than mine does! Read and enjoy Adventures With Vinnie! If you're a pet owner, or have a heart for animals, this is a touching story of truth and life with one of life's ragamuffins.

Nancee and Donna, this is a great post. And It sounds like a wonderful book. Congratulations on your new launch, and thank you for championing the cause of shelter rescue. I have two rescue dogs right now,and one of them would give Vinnie a run for his money!
ReplyDeleteKathleen, thanks for stopping by and commenting on a topic dear to my heart as well. I'm a crazy cat lady myself, but believe in rescuing my fur friends from shelters too. Good luck with your rescues!
DeleteKathleen,
DeleteThanks for your comment and for your rescues of dogs who need a home. Some of them are, shall we say, easier to manage than others. Then there are those who demand a story of their own, like Vinnie.
Blessings,
Donna Winters
Oh this is such a nice story. Love dogs. Haven't had one for a while because it is always so hard on us when we lose one...
ReplyDeleteSonja, I understand what you're saying about the difficulty when losing a pet. I'm a firm believer in replacement therapy, not truly replacing the pet that has passed on, but acquiring a new pet to love.
DeleteI wish Donna much success as she raises awareness and funds for such a special cause and I look forward to reading this touching story! Thank you for sharing a great review, Nancee!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Britney! I too hope that many people purchase a copy of this book. Shelters need loving people to adopt those pets that no one else wants. Shelter pets many times turn out to be the most loving.
DeleteSonja and Britney, thanks for coming by to learn about my Vinnie story. It is really a truthful account that had it's humorous moments, the joke being on my husband and me! :)
ReplyDeleteNancee,
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for your review! You worded it just right. I was brutally honest about the incidents in the book. Vinnie caused some difficult moments, for sure, but we pushed on, hoping for improvements as we worked with his quirky personality. And much to his credit, he was a wonderfully affectionate fellow, and thereby made up for his transgressions as best he could.
Blessings,
Donna Winters
Donna, you're very welcome! It was my pleasure reading about Vinnie and all the escapades that you, Fred, Babe and Vinnie shared. It was certainly a bumpy ride, but one I won't soon forget! Thank you for sharing a copy of your book. Blessings to you and Fred!
